Tenofovir Alafenamide: All You Need To Know About

Tenofovir alafenamide is an antiviral prescription medication approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of adults with hepatitis B virus infection (HBV) who meet certain requirements, as determined by a healthcare professional.

Hepatitis B virus can be an opportunistic infection (OI) of HIV. An opportunistic infection is an infection that occurs more often or is more severe in those individuals who are with impaired immune systems; such as individuals with HIV, than in individuals with strong immune systems.

The tenofovir alafenamide is also a component of several FDA-approved FDC (fixed-dose combination) tablets to treat HIV infection. The emtricitabine/tenofovir alafenamide fixed-dose combination tablet (Descovy) is also approved for HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP).

Dosing Regimen

Tenofovir Alafenamide is supplied as a 25 mg dosage strength small tablet that you take once a day with food. You must take tenofovir 25 mg exactly how your health specialist tells you to. If you are on dialysis, on your dialysis days, take your dosage after dialysis. It’s also important to take the tablets on a regular dosing schedule in order to avoid missing doses. Do not stop taking dosage unless your health specialist tells you to. If you stop taking your medication, your hepatitis B virus infection could get worse (flare-up). A “flare-up” is when your hepatitis B virus infection unexpectedly pop ups in a worse way than before. It is very necessary that you refill your prescription on time, before you run out. If you take too much tenofovir 25 mg, call your healthcare professional or head to the nearest hospital emergency room immediately.

Before Taking Tenofovir Alafenamide:

Tell your health specialist about entire your medical conditions, including if you:

  • have HIV-1 infection. Your health specialist may test you for HIV infection prior to treatment with tenofovir. If you have both HIV and HBV, and you only take tenofovir alafenamide 25 mg, the HIV virus may develop resistance and be difficult to treat.
  • have an end-stage renal disease (ESRD).
  • are pregnant or intent to become pregnant.
  • are breastfeeding or intent to breastfeed.

Inform your health specialist about all the medications you take:

  • Keep a list that includes all prescription and OTC medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements, and show it to your health specialist.
  • Ask your health specialist about medications that may interact with tenofovir alafenamide.
