All you need to know about Atazanavir Ritonavir

atazanavir ritonavir

What is Atazanavir Ritonavir?

Atazanavir: This is PI which is commonly called protease inhibitor. This protease inhibitor inhibits the replication of the Human immunodeficiency virus in combination with other ARV (antiretroviral agents). Atazanavir is existing as 150mg or 300mg hard gel capsules.

Ritonavir: This PI which is commonly known as protease inhibitor. This protease inhibitor inhibits the replication of the Human Immunodeficiency syndrome virus in combination with other ARV (antiretroviral agents) or to increase blood levels of other protease inhibitors. Ritonavir is existing as a 100mg tablet or a 100mg soft gel capsules and a 80 mg / mL liquid.

Uses of Atazanavir Ritonavir:

The combination of Atazanavir Ritonavir (ATV / r) medication basically used for the treatment of patients with HIV / AIDS. This combination of atazanavir / ritonavir may be used instead of Lopinavir Ritonavir

Side Effects of Atazanavir and Ritonavir:

  • Some common side effects of Atazanavir may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and headache.
  • Patients may also experience some fatigue, dizziness, weakness, body ache or rash.
  • Immediately seek medical help from your healthcare provider in order to avoid any complications.
  • The common side effects of Ritonavir include vomiting, nausea, anorexia, diarrhea, abdominal pain, taste disturbances and abnormal sensations in the hands, feet or in and around the mouth.
  • Also, some other adverse effects may include sweating, headache, fever, lightheadedness, muscle weakness and insomnia.

Atazanavir and Ritonavir for the treatment of HIV:

In the combination of atazanavir and ritonavir, Atazanavir mainly functions as a protease inhibitor and on the other hand ritonavir functions in order to increase the levels of atazanavir.
Atazanavir is majorly used in the treatment of Human Immunodeficiency Virus. This medication is associated with great efficacy in ART-naive as well as ART-experienced adults.
Atazanavir is reputed from rest PIs (Protease Inhibitors), it is well known for its lesser effects on the lipid profile, and also this PI appears to be less likely to cause the lipodystrophy. There may be some cross-resistant with other Protease Inhibitors. When the combination of atazanavir and ritonavir comes into action, Ritonavir boosts the effects of Atazanavir and makes this medication equivalent in potency to lopinavir.
Apart from this atazanavir is one of the preferred HIV medications to use in pregnant women who have not taken HIV medicines before. This medication (Atazanavir) is also known for its better cholesterol profile.
Last but not least, Atazanavir appears to be a safe treatment option during pregnancy. But still, before using this medication by a pregnant woman, they must need to talk to their healthcare provider.

What is the reason behind taking these two protease inhibitors together?

When the combination of atazanavir and ritonavir are taken together, ritonavir will “boost” the level of atazanavir and increase its effect.

How do I take these?

  • The usual adult dose is atazanavir 300 mg (1 x 300 mg capsule OR 2 x 150 mg capsules) once daily, with ritonavir 100 mg (1 tablet or capsule) once daily.
  • Take the combination of atazanavir and ritonavir tablets at the same time. Take only according to the prescription of your healthcare provider.
  • The medication should be taken with food, light meals would be better in order to increase absorption.
  • Swallow the capsules or tablets whole, do not chew.
  • Contact your healthcare provider if you are going to take such medications that contain products like antacid or antacids and also make sure it must be taken at least 1 hr prior or 2 hrs after your dose of atazanavir.
  • Use of Alcohol should be avoided during the first 4 weeks of therapy and should be used with caution thereafter.
