Indian Generic Medicine

A generic drug is a pharmaceutical drug that mainly contains the identical chemical substance as a drug that was originally developed and protected by the chemical patents. Generic drugs are legally allowed for sale when the original patents expire. Because active substance (chemical substance) is the same, the medical profile of the generic drug is proved to be the same in the performance. A generic drug mainly has the same API, which stands for active pharmaceutical ingredient, as the original, but a generic drug could differ in several characteristics including the process of manufacturing, formulation, excipients, packaging, taste and color.

In the early 1960s, the Government of India (GOI) initiated encouraging a lot of drug manufacturing by the Indian companies with the Patents Act in 1970. In 2002, the code of ethics was issued by the MCI India (Medical Council of India)  calling for physicians in order to prescribe medications by their generic names only. India is marking itself as a leading nation in the market of world's generic drugs.

India has appeared to have a dominant capability in order to produce the quality generic as well as branded drugs in maximum therapeutic categories.

However, still there are overburdened healthcare expenses on poor people in the country. Accordingly, the Indian government has taken some important steps in order to enable a key objective of ensuring the availability of quality medicines at affordable prices to all.
As a part of this objective, the Indian Government has started a project named Jan Aushadhi in November 2008 which helps in all the ways to set up generic medicine stores.
In the year of 1969, Indian pharmaceuticals had a 5% share of the market in India, and on the other hand global pharma had a 95 % share. By 2020, things have been changed, and Indian pharma having approximately 85 % share and global just 15 %. Over more than 50 years in terms of meeting the domestic needs and building a dominant position in the world pharmaceuticals landscape Indian pharmaceuticals or firms have been successful. India already contributes more than 20 % by value to the global generics market, with Indian products contributing more than 40 % (by volume) of United States drugs. This is the reason, most of the overseas countries choose Indian pharmacies.
